Beyond

‘Beyond’ is the title of Antonella Grima’s current solo exhibition. It comprises a collection of twenty five ink paintings executed between 2004 and 2005, portraying a rather innovative theme.

Stars, moons, galaxies and heavenly bodies feature in this collection, each painting having its unique accent and interpretation. The style chosen for this collection is semi – abstract and almost dreams – like in quality, in keeping with the intangible reality of our universe – all that lies beyond our mother earth.

The hues of this collection are soothing to the eye and evoke a feeling of calm, of depth, of distance. Cool shades of blue and intertwining greys contrast with stark glaring whites. A play of dark and light scattered over the paintings remind the viewer on the starry August nights when, given the time, one lies on a sandy beach and admires the heavens above, stopping to meditate upon life, spirituality, the infinite millennia for which our universe has stood – beyond our mundane surroundings and into the depth of the soul.

The theme ‘Beyond’ does  not only portray physical distance between human life and the infinite universe but also attempts to evoke a sense of looking beyond everyday life, into the future, the unknown – with a sense of wonder at what may lie ahead.

Although each painting portrays a particular scene, a particular galaxy or heavenly body, the artist chose not to entitle these paintings, inviting the viewer to find his or her own interpretation and his or her own inspiration or personal thought, inviting the viewer to delve into his or her own soul and look beyond.
