Mosaic The scene portrayed by this mosaic is a rocky shore in the foreground, a rough Mediterranean Sea breaking onto it. The sea fades into a blue sky at the horizon. A blazing sun occupies an upper quadrant of the mosaic. The texture of the different components of the mosaic was created utilising fragments of different sizes and composition. The rocky shore was created utilising sharp porcelain fragments, depicting the jagged Maltese rocks. The crests of the waves were produced using pointed porcelain splinters, while the troughs of the waves were composed of smooth pieces. The froth produced by the breaking waves was created using fine porcelain granules fixed with plaster. The sky was produced by placing concentric circles of smooth porcelain around the sun, decreasing the colour intensity and the smoothness of the fragments as the distance from the sun increased. 35" x 25" |
