Showtime August 5 2005 SHOWTIME THE TIMES ARTS SUPPLEMENT ART Planet Art Antonella Grima tells Showtirne about her paintings and her upcoming exhibition Beyond at Heritage Malta. I am 23 years old, currently finishing my final year at university. I'm a self‑taught artist who has participated in a number of collective exhibitions and take pride in keeping my own website where I present an online gallery of my paintings executed in the last four years. Art has always formed an important, if not essential, part of my life. Ever since I can remember, I have longed for the day when I would hold my own personal exhibition. After much hesitation, and encouragement, I decided about a year ago to take the plunge and turn this dream into reality. This reality came under the name of the exhibition entitled Beyond. The word "beyond" not only represents the physical distance between myself and the subject of my paintings, but also depicts a state of mind ‑ looking beyond the present, waiting for what the future might bring. With this collection of paintings, I aim to awaken in the viewer a sense of spirituality, a sense of awe at the wonders of nature and the many mysteries it holds, a sense of searching for answers to the inquisitive human mind. In this collection of 25 ink paintings, I delve into the infinite and astounding heavens that surround us. I look beyond our mundane surroundings and try to catch a glimpse of the stars, the moons, the sky. Each painting portrays a particular aspect of our universe, with my interpretation of it. However, I chose not to entitle these works, allowing the viewer to find his or her own interpretation and contemplation about the subject. The predominant colours are soothing shades of blue, contrasting with luminous whites, a play between light and dark. Antonella Grima's exhibition Beyond can be viewed at the Heritage Malta head office, Valletta, between August 8 and September 11. Ms Grima's exhibition is sponsored by BOV Attard & Co and Jesper's Danish Bakery.
